Helping You Stay Safe & Compliant
A pink slip isn’t just about ticking a box for registration—it’s about keeping you, your passengers, and other road users safe. During a safety check, inspectors examine all critical components, including tyres, brakes, seatbelts, and lights, ensuring they meet strict NSW requirements. If any issues are found, you’ll be given clear guidance on what needs to be fixed and why, so you can get repairs done quickly and avoid delays in your rego renewal.
By choosing an authorised inspection station like Border Power Steering Service, you know your vehicle is in the hands of qualified professionals who take the time to inspect thoroughly and explain things in everyday language. What is an NSW pink slip safety check?
A pink slip, officially called an eSafety Check, is a vehicle inspection required by the NSW Government for cars more than five years old before registration can be renewed. During the inspection, a licensed examiner checks key safety components such as brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, seatbelts, and lights to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy. If the car passes, the results are electronically sent to Transport for NSW, allowing the registration process to continue online or at a Service NSW centre. If the car fails, the owner receives a detailed report of issues that must be fixed before registration can be renewed.
How long does a pink slip inspection take?
Most safety checks for cars and light vehicles take around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the condition of the vehicle. The process can take longer if the inspector finds issues that need more detailed examination. For a well-maintained vehicle, the check is usually straightforward. However, if faults are found, the vehicle owner is given 14 days to have the repairs carried out and return for a free re-inspection. If the repairs are not completed within that time, a new inspection and fee are required.
What happens if my car fails a pink slip?
If a vehicle fails the safety check, the inspector issues a “repair needed” report that lists the specific faults preventing the car from passing. Common reasons for failure include bald tyres, worn brake pads, faulty lights, or leaking steering components. Vehicle owners have 14 days to complete the necessary repairs and return to the same inspection station for a re-check at no extra charge. If the repairs take longer than 14 days, a new inspection and fee will be required. Driving a car that is unsafe or unregistered can result in fines and may void insurance coverage, so it’s important to fix issues promptly.
